CLASSES AT THE ARTS CENTER

Registration and Location Information

Unless otherwise specified, classes take place at The Arts Center, 320 N. White Street, Athens, Tennessee.

Call 745-8781 to register OR complete and send the registration form with payment to AACA, PO Box 95, Athens, TN 37371-0095 OR register online at www.athensartscouncil.org. prior to class start date.


 

Class Registration Policies

  • Pre-register for classes and workshops anytime up to a week before session begins.
  • Payment of class fee must be made in full at time of registration. REGISTRATION IS NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT PAYMENT.
  • Full refunds only available up to one week before class starts. No refunds after this time if student cancels.
  • If AACA cancels class for any reason, full refunds will be paid to registrants.
  • All classes/workshops must have a minimum number of students to be offered.
  • AACA reserves the right to cancel those classes in which a sufficient registration is not achieved.
  • Registrants will be given or sent a supply/materials list upon registration.
  • The materials fee, where applicable, MUST be paid with the registration fee.
  • A family discount is available for siblings under the age of 18 when taking the same class only.
  • Class registration grants permission to AACA to use your or your childs image for publicity purposes unless otherwise instructed. You must sign off on a hard copy of the registration form available at The Arts Center if permission is denied.

001 FUN-KIE SHLUMPIE CLAY

June 16 & 23 with Lizz Harris,
5:30 - 7:30 p.m., $35

 

Tuesdays

Ages 8-15

Workshop participants will learn about using "armature" to create medium size (6" - 8" min.) clay sculptures from design concept to glazing in a few simple steps.

002 MEET THE ARTIST: PABLO PICASSO I

July 14 & 21 with Heather Lattimore,
1:00 - 2:00 p.m., $35

Learn about the life and work of 20th century artist Pablo Picasso and use that as inspiration to create a portrait painting using oil pastels and tempera paints. Additional projects may be created as time permits.

006 YARD ART FOR ALL AGES

Treat yourself to some creative R & R or bring an art partner to  make a fun summer memory! Students will make sculptures for outdoor display using wire and found objects, re-purposed for artistic purposes!

007 HANDBUILDING TABLEWARE IN CLAY

June 15 & 22 with Lizz Harris,

Students will learn some basic techniques as well as some quick & easy design ideas to create table and serving ware for entertaining & everyday use. Glazing included. All skill levels are welcome.

009 GET OUT OF THE AUDIENCE AND ONTO THE STAGE

July 7,9,14, & 16 with Melonie Carideo,

Community theater is a great way to let your inner actor out of the bag, but if you have held back because you’re not sure how to go about getting on stage, then this class is for you. Build your self-confidence by learning basic audition and acting techniques, play acting terminology, how to prepare audition monologues and music, and how to prepare to be in a play. Individual coaching will help you hone your skills AND you will walk away with an audition piece.

010 GARDEN MOSAIC STEPPING STONES AND FLOWER POTS

June 16 & 23 with Heather Lattimore,
5:30 - 7:30 p.m., $55

Ages 18 and up

$55 includes needed materials and equipment

 

For the beginning or experienced mosaic artists. Students will learn to cut their own glass mosaic pieces as well as use found objects to decorate and finish a flower pot or stepping stone for your garden. You will also learn about the supplies and techniques needed to design and grout your own mosaic artwork.

Please specify either the flower pot or stepping stone when registering.

Past and Present Instructors

Allen Hampton, Instructor
Allen has 23 years experience in making pottery. He sells his work through shows and galleries throughout the region.

April Bascle

April Bascle inherited a set of antique ladder back chairs about 12 years ago, but couldn’t find anyone to replace the seats. So she taught herself to cane chairs and liked it so much, she went into replacing chair bottoms as a business. Originally from Stoney Creek, Tennessee, she has resided in Athens for 13 years.

Becky Bryant

Becky Bryant holds a B.S. in Art Education from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and is a certified teacher of grades K-12. She is currently a part-time art teacher at City Park Elementary School.

Beth Simpson

Beth Simpson has been creating and developing specialized movement education programs for the past two years and has worked with individuals and groups. She is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner who also holds a M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology.

 

Chris Ingram, Instructor
With a Bachelor's in Fine Arts with a Concentration on Studio Drawing and Painting from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, Chris works professionally as a graphic artist and routinely sells commissioned artwork to clients.

Clint Cooper
Clint is a professional illustrator and cartoonist who has worked freelance for newspapers and magazines. He is a graduate of Ringling School of Art and Design with a B.A. in Illustration and a minor in Graphic Arts. Currently a resident of Athens, he has resided in New York and Florida previoulsy.

Elaine Guffey
Elaine has 30 years experience in teaching all forms of dance in her studio. She holds a B.A. in Dance from Butler University and a M.S. from UTK. She is the dance program director at Pellissippi State and dance instructor at TWC.

Geri Forkner, Instructor
Geri Forkne taught art for many years in Atlanta and now has a teaching studio, Weaving Arts Studio, in Tellico Plains, TN. Her innovative work as a weaver, spinner, and felter has been featured in exhibits throughout the Southeast. She is a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild.

Hank Ray
Hank Ray has been a professional artist for over 30 years and has taught for 17. He has won numerous awards for his work and pieces are in private and corporate collections world-wide. Having recently relocated to the area, he works in various media, including pyrography, silver point, handmade/cast paper, and scratchboard.

Heather Lattimore
Heather currently teaches art at Walker Valley High School in Bradley County. She is a graduate of UTK with a BFA in Fine Arts/Ceramics and a Masters in Education. She began creating mosaics about three years ago.

Hildreth Rinehart, Instructor
Hildreth Rinehart has been teaching theater and voice for over 10 years. She holds a BA in Theater Arts and Education and has also been certified to teach English as a Second Language to adults. Originally from Toronto, she now resides in Decautr.

Jenny Bennett

Jenny Bennett has been spinning and knitting lots of interesting yarns for 20+ years, from alpaca, sheep, rabbits, and dogs to cotton, silk, bamboo, and flax. She also teaches spinning at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, North Carolina.

 

Jerry Hagaman, Instructor
Artist, teacher, owner of Athens Art and Frame: Jerry wears many hats in the local arts community. He earned his B.F.A. from East Tennessee State University and his M.F.A. from the University of Kansas. He currently teaches drawing and design at Tennessee Wesleyan College.

Karina Edwards, Instructor
Karina Edwards is originally from England and now lives in Decatur, TN. She studied art in her home country and has been involved with teaching children's art classes in a variety of settings.

Kathryn Hunter
Kathryn Hunter is doing double duty at The Arts Center this session. She learned to speak Spanish in Honduras as a Peace Corp Volunterr and has since lived and worked in Paraguay and in the International Office of the US Forest Service for Latin America and the Caribbean. Kathryn has also been contra dancing since 1979 and even met her husband, who may assist her, at a contra dance. She has taught the dance form around the world as she travels to various countries to work on international forestry projects.

Kris Ford

Kris Ford is an art/education major at Tennessee Wesleyan College who will be graduating in May. Drawing for more than four years, his award-winning works show his penchant for realism with a twist of trompe l’oeil, surrealism, and still life.

Kristin Harrison
Kristin Harrison has a masters degree in early childhood education from Berry College. She has taught kindergarten and is currently working with Athens City Schools in a reading program for K - 1 students.

Lizz Harris

Lizz Harris has taught children’s art classes at the Arts Center since its opening. She holds a B.A. from Tennessee Wesleyan College, is involved with many artistic projects in the community, and has her own business creating hand painted clothing & accessories for women, children and dogs.

Mary Whittle

Mary Whittle began sharing the art of non-toxic printmaking over 15 years ago. She holds a BFA in drawing and printmaking and has done graduate work in England and Italy. The non-toxic method is the result of research done over many years.  She is member of the Southern Highlands and Foothills Craft Guilds, TACA, and the Florida Printmakers Society.

Melonie Carideo
Melonie Carideo holds a BFA in Theater from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro, and is proud to have earned a living in the theater business as an actress, singer, performer, and director. Now a real estate broker with Crye-Leike, she and her husband own Keith Mansion Bed and Breakfast in Athens.

Missy Wilson

Missy Wilson has practiced yoga for over 15 years and holds a Yoga Alliance 500 teaching certificate. She is the former owner of Yoga for Life Studio.

Nancy Sherbrooke

Nancy Sherbrooke holds a B.S. in Fine Arts from Skidmore College and has spent her career making, designing, and selling fine and costume jewelry. While continuing to take related courses to increase her knowledge, she has worked for Trifari, Monet, Napier and Victoria + Co., which produced label lines for Nine West, Givenchy, Karl Lagerfield and others.

Oneta Wright
Oneta Wright has been playing and teaching the guitar for many years. She also plays regularly at many venues around the area and continues to give private lessons in her home studio.

Ron Brown, Instructor
Ron has been a collector of early American traditional music for over 30 years. The emphasis of his collection has been on 1920's-1930's era country, blues, and Cajun recordings. He has collaborated on several country and Cajun reissue projects and has conducted research on lesser known 1920's era recorded musicians.

Rusty Patterson

Rusty Patterson has taken lessons from several area instructors over the years and has competed with many area clogging teams in competitions throughout East Tennessee and Georgia. He has also performed at various venues, including the 1982 Worlds Fair and  Silver Dollar City.

Sandy Brown, Instructor
Sandy holds a degree in art from Northeastern Illinois University and has done post-graduate work in studio art and art history. An award-winning watercolorist, she has given workshops in Illinois and Wisconsin and has taught at The Arts Center since its opening.  

Vickie Blair

Vickie Blair began drawing in 1998 while experimenting with other mediums. By 2000 she began to work exclusively with graphite and now teaches non-credit courses for Cleveland State Community College. Her award winning portraits have led to numerous commissions. She is a member of the Community Artists League.
